Sustainable Livelihood

In Assam, banana cultivation thrives, yet the discarded pseudostems often go unused, representing both an environmental challenge and a missed economic opportunity. At Earthful Foundation, we’re transforming this overlooked resource into a catalyst for sustainable livelihoods.

Our Banana Fibre Livelihood Initiative empowers rural communities to convert banana plant waste into strong, biodegradable fibres suitable for textiles, crafts, and eco-friendly products. Through hands-on training, market access, and essential tools, we enable the creation of sustainable micro-enterprises. Surveys conducted in Narengkati and surrounding villages near Jamugurihat (Sonitpur District) revealed a strong interest among farmers and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in fibre-based livelihoods. To further our understanding, we visited Parijat Academy to observe real-time fibre processing and travelled to Kolkata to evaluate fibre extractors and stem cutter machinery for rural deployment.

This program extends beyond skill development; it’s a model for sustainable income, circular economy, and community resilience.
